So this week we say goodbye to the 6,000 Year 6 pupils we’ve been supporting with 1-to-1 Maths lessons every week all the way through to SATs. You and we have done our best for them and now we have to trust that we’ve given them the confidence, resilience, and Maths education to do their best too.

It’s a sad time for all of us, but especially our 1-to-1 tutors who have developed relationships with the Year 6 pupils over a term, and sometimes even two terms, learning how to motivate them, how to challenge them, and what elements of Maths they need help on.

Getting to know the new Year 4s and Year 5s

The good news is that it means we get to say hello to our next cohort of Year 4 and Year 5 pupils and start the process all over again!

So what can these new Year 4 and 5s expect from their personalised 1-to-1 Maths tuition? Well, before they even start their first lesson, we’ll be asking them to fill in a ‘getting to know you’ questionnaire so the tutor knows their interests and what engages them so they can personalise their lesson. Then, if a school requests it, their pupils will complete a diagnostic assessment which identifies which topics to focus on. Or the class teacher can choose the topic for each pupil.

First lesson

And then it’s time for the pupil’s first online lesson from their tutor. This is where the pupil first starts to experience the magic of having focused 1-to-1 attention from a Maths specialist for 45 minutes.

After the initial introductions, it can take pupils a few minutes to warm up, to understand how to use the online classroom [our tutors work with pupils online], and to realise that the more they talk and explaining their reasoning the more they get out of the lessons. But once the nerves are over, they’re flying… after all it’s not every day, as a Year 5 pupil you’re sat at a computer with a headset on talking to your own personal Maths tutor.

And that first moment you hear a child start a sentence ‘The reason I got that answer was because’ or ‘Yes, let’s try that question now’ is a truly special one.
