Once again SATs season is fast approaching and we’re all on the lookout for high quality free KS2 SATs papers, KS2 SATs revision resources, tests and sample SATs questions to support our Year 6 in the National Assessments in Maths.

While the cornerstone of effective teaching and learning in mathematics will always be effective subject teaching, at this time of year, if you’re a Year 6 teacher tasked with improving on last year’s SATs results you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s all about the national assessments and effective test preparation.

We can’t do it alone but there is help available and many good free KS2 SATs papers and KS2 revision resources which can be used in the classroom to support teachers and enable pupils to achieve the marks they deserve.

Read on for a few of my favourites.

#### 1. Third Space Learning’s free KS2 SATs papers

We’re starting and ending with the free KS2 SATs papers and SATs revision resources Third Space Learning has on offer (for obvious reasons 😊 !)

First up, if you haven’t downloaded their two sets of free SATs papers you’re missing a trick: Here is Pack 1 of their free KS2 Maths SATs paper and here is Pack 2.

Over 10,000 downloads in total and lots of comments like ‘these are the best papers I’ve ever seen’. A definite boon for Spring term planning.

## Looking for a full set of free KS2 SATs Papers on Arithmetic and Reasoning?

#### 2. satspapers.org for all past KS2 SATs papers

It’s the most obvious one but it’s still very useful as it has all of the previous past government KS2 National Assessment papers on it. As a teacher, I often share this one with parents so they can access and support children with test style questions at home. For your own teaching use, I’d be wary of using all but the 2016 style KS2 SATs papers onwards for any complete assessments, but the individual questions available are still very valid.

#### 3. NCETM bank of free Maths SATs resources

National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics have produced some excellent primary assessment resources which can be used as formative or summative tasks with Year 6. From my own experience of these, I would advise you edit each of the questions slightly and develop your own bank of KS2 SATs assessment questions for Maths. Helpfully, you can build whole lessons around one question or one question style or even a complete KS2 SATs Paper.

#### 4. Diagnostic Questions for KS2 SATs preparation

Diagnostic Questions is a great resource of diagnostic quizzes for end of KS1 and KS2. Sign up is necessary but worth it. Often I use the resources as starting activities, then reverse engineer them by working with the whole class to think of the steps and skills needed to answer it in reverse. This is great SATs preparation.

The White Rose Maths Hub in conjunction with Diagnostic Questions has also produced daily Maths quizzes to support KS1 and KS2 SATs revision, with questions split into areas aligned with the curriculum that in the style of KS2 SATs papers.

#### 5. White Rose Maths Hub SATs style reasoning resources

The WRMH’s own free resources are in frequent use across primary schools, with reasoning looming so large in the national assessments, I use their KS2 SATs style reasoning resources linked to each area of the maths curriculum. Perfect for reverse engineering required skills from questions.

#### 6. The Primary Maths Challenge (PMC) – ideal for KS2 SATs Revision

This is a fun and exciting mathematical challenge aimed at pupils in years 5 and 6. It has lots of activities and free KS2 SATs test papers and can be found online here.

#### 7. Emaths free KS2 SATs papers

Mark McCourt has been sharing free Maths pedagogy and KS2 Maths revision resources on his Emaths blog since 2004. He’s created a range of new national curriculum style SATs past papers and resources for both KS1 and KS2. Also – the cherry on the top – resources are often donated to the site by other teachers.

#### 8. Rising Stars KS2 progress tests

Rising Stars have some truly great free SATs revision resources, especially for arithmetic. Although they only appear to have produced free versions of their test resources for year 3, 4 and 5, it is important to remember that ultimately children sit an end of KS2 SATs and will be tested on the year 3, 4, 5 and 6 curriculum. As such, these practice KS2 SATs papers and resources can still be hugely useful.

#### 9. TES downloadable free KS2 SATs paper template – Arithmetic

A teacher’s best friend, TES offers a downloadable Maths SATs Arithmetic template in the style and format of the KS2 SATs arithmetic paper which, once downloaded, can be edited regularly with different arithmetic questions. You can even edit it so that every question focuses on a particular element of arithmetic such as adding fractions to enable the KS2 Maths revision to help the children gain speed, fluency and confidence.

#### 10. Ultimate KS2 Maths Organiser

The Ultimate KS2 Maths organiser is not strictly free but it’s so useful and so inexpensive we thought it worth including within your KS2 SATs revision. You can also find YouTube videos for every past KS2 SATs paper; each question is clickable and directs the user to a YouTube video to explain how to solve the problem. They are broken into key areas of the curriculum and contain every question asked on that KS2 Maths concept from past KS2 SATs papers. I have used them in school as starters, plenaries, and for homework.

#### 11. Headstart Primary KS2 SATs papers

Headstart Primary sell highly engaging and intuitive Maths and English teaching materials, and as part of their suite of KS2 SATs revision resources have some useful free Year 6 assessments.

#### 12. My Mini Maths

Many schools now do 5 a day – that is 5 questions linked to each of the main operations at the start or end of every maths session (as recommended in the downloadable free KS2 SATs Catch-up and Revision Guide by Claire Lotriet). My Mini Maths makes preparing this considerably easier than doing it yourself! They also have new mini arithmetic and reasoning tasks that you can set every day as part of your KS2 Maths revision.

#### 13. Maths Frame

An oldie but a goody, Maths Frame have all of the KS2 maths objectives as strands. Helpfully, clicking into an area of maths allows teachers to open interactives or generate a short SATs style assessment linked that that particular strand of maths and focus in on – for example – the year 6 programme of study.

#### 14. 75 topic based SATs Maths questions based on KS2 SATs Papers

For those times you’re looking for SATs questions on a particular concept as part of your KS2 Maths revision, Third Space has created 3 KS2 SATs papers with mixed arithmetic and reasoning questions on the following:

Place Value KS2 SATs Questions

Fractions Decimals and Percentage KS2 SATs Questions

Addition and Subtraction KS2 SATs Questions

You can pick and choose from these questions or use diagnostically by asking your pupils to sit an entire test that will then reveal their concept gaps.

#### 15. Third Space’s essential SLT KS2 SATs resources

And just to finish off, these two free KS2 SATs resources are a valuable additon for any SLT involved in SATs preparation.

> Year 6 Catch up and Revision Guide from TES blogger and Assistant Headteacher Claire Lotriet

> KS2 SATs Wellbeing Guide – essential for your Year 6 teachers, pupils and parents to put this time of year into perspective and ensure wellbeing is kept at the forefront.

#### There’s more to life than the KS2 SATs!

It’s worth reiterating how important it is to remember that while resources can be useful for any teacher, effective teaching must always come first for learning and progress in mathematics.
